![]() Their loving responses and support not only consoled me, but also helped lift me out of that hole I’d been festering in alone. I wasn’t sure how I was going to continue in such a constant state of agitation, nausea, and fear.įinally, when I was at my lowest point, I confessed everything to my Pitch Wars 2014 group. Not all of it was writing-related angst, mind you-I was experiencing a lot of life-changing experiences at the time-suffice to say that it reached a point where I woke up every day filled with dread. This isn’t something widely known, but while writing Counterpart, I struggled with some of the most severe anxiety of my life. ![]() ![]() With that said, here are three lessons that I’ve learned doing Pitch Wars over the years, which helped me while working on Counterpart.ġ. It’s all part of the reason I come back each year to mentor: I want to encourage other writers the same way I was encouraged, and pass on the same wisdom that was passed on to me. ![]() Getting into the contest gave me a confidence boost exactly at the point I needed one the most, but even more importantly, it helped me discover a community of writers that I sorely needed.
